Guidelines

At Sunnah Nikaah we believe marriage is a sacred union, conducted according to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These guidelines help you pursue marriage the Sunnah way.

1. How to seek a spouse

Things to consider:

  • Prayer and du'a— turn to Allah first: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Qur'an 40:60).
  • Seek Allah's help— marriage completes half of one's deen; approach it with sincerity and tawakkul.
  • Family consultation — involve your parents and elders for guidance from the very beginning.
  • Character over appearance — prioritise piety, manners and Islamic values above worldly considerations.
  • Halal interaction — maintain modesty and proper limits when communicating with potential matches.

Where to seek:

  • Islamic community events, conferences and lectures.
  • Mosques and Islamic centres.
  • Trusted online matrimonial platforms serving your community.
  • Referrals from family, friends and respected community members.
  • Consultation with scholars and people of knowledge.
  • Above all — patience, prayer and open communication with your family.

2. How to approach for marriage

  • Express interest through the proper channel — the family or wali — rather than in private.
  • A wali (guardian) is required for every sister; on Sunnah Nikaah a sister's contact is shared only through her wali.
  • Be clear and honest about your intentions, circumstances and expectations from the first conversation.
  • Meet in the presence of family (no khalwah/seclusion), and it is encouraged for the prospective spouses to see one another before deciding.
  • Pray salat al-istikhara when weighing a decision, and consult those whose deen and judgement you trust.

3. The marriage event, the Sunnah way

  • Keep the nikaah simple — the most blessed nikaah is the one with the least burden.
  • The essentials: consent of both parties, the wali of the bride, two witnesses, and the mahr agreed and honoured.
  • Agree the mahr generously but within means; it is the bride's right alone.
  • Announce the marriage and hold a walimah according to your means.
  • Avoid extravagance, un-Islamic customs and unnecessary debt.

4. How to be a good husband

  • Follow the example of the Prophet ﷺ: "The best of you are those who are best to their wives."
  • Provide for and protect your family with kindness, never with harshness.
  • Help with the household, as the Prophet ﷺ did, and make time for your wife.
  • Be patient, overlook small faults, and resolve disagreements with gentleness.
  • Support your wife's deen, her connection with her family, and her personal growth.

5. How to be a good wife

  • Build the marriage on taqwa — mutual love, mercy and tranquillity (Qur'an 30:21).
  • Be a source of comfort and counsel for your husband, and guard the trust of the home.
  • Communicate openly and kindly; raise concerns with wisdom rather than letting them fester.
  • Encourage one another in worship, gratitude and good character.
  • Honour both families and keep ties of kinship strong.

6. Tips to solve post-marital issues

  • Address problems early, privately and calmly — do not broadcast marital disputes.
  • Return to the Qur'an and Sunnah for guidance, and judge yourself before your spouse.
  • Involve trusted elders or an arbiter from each family when you cannot resolve a matter alone (Qur'an 4:35).
  • Seek help from qualified scholars or Islamic marriage counsellors where needed.
  • Be quick to forgive, and remember the good in your spouse: "a believer should not hate a believing woman — if he dislikes one trait, he is pleased with another."
